TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a globally recognized standardized exam that assesses the English proficiency of non-native speakers. It is widely accepted by universities, colleges, and institutions around the world as a reliable measure of an individual’s ability to understand, use, and communicate in English effectively.

TOEFL Test Formats

The TOEFL exam is available in two main formats

  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test)

    The most commonly used format, conducted online, evaluating skills in Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.

  • TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test)

    A less common format, administered on paper, assessing similar language skills.

TOEFL Test Structure

  • Reading (54-72 minutes)

    The Reading section consists of 3 to 4 passages on various academic topics, followed by 10 questions per passage. Scores for this section range from 0 to 30. Practicing with TOEFL reading exercises can help enhance comprehension skills.

  • Listening (41-57 minutes)

    The Listening section evaluates the ability to comprehend spoken English through lectures and conversations:

This section primarily features North American accents, with occasional variations from Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

  • Speaking (17 minutes)

    The Speaking section consists of 4 tasks designed to assess fluency and clarity:

    Express an opinion on a familiar topic (30 seconds preparation time).

  • πŸ“– Integrated Tasks (3 tasks)

    Respond to prompts based on reading and listening exercises (1-minute preparation time).

Scoring ranges from 0 to 4, which is then converted to a 0-30 scale.

  • Writing (50 minutes)

    The Writing section consists of two tasks:

  • ✍ Task 1 (Integrated Writing)

    Combines information from a reading passage and a listening excerpt.

  • πŸ“ Task 2 (Independent Writing)

    Requires candidates to express and support their opinion on a given topic.

Evaluation & Scoring

  • πŸ“Š The TOEFL test is scored on a 0 to 120 scale, with each section contributing 0 to 30 points.
  • βœ… TOEFL scores are evaluated by Certified Educational Testing Service (ETS) administrators.

Online score reports are available within six days after the test.
Hard copy score reports can be obtained within 11 days of the exam.
